Bhawani Prasad (Jayant) is a don whose dark deeds cast a shadow over his family and two generations of his close relatives. Against the wishes of his wife (Durga Khote), his son (Iftekhar) and daughter-in-law (Sulochana) Bhawani Prasad takes away his only grandson Kundan (Dilip Kumar) and tries to bring him up in an atmosphere of hatred and violence. But Kundan rebels against the inflicting of hurt and pain on innocents. The gap between grandfather and grandson widens as the sensitive Kundan tries to heal the wounds inflicted by his grandfather.
Kundan’s cousins Ganeshi Prasad (Balraj Sahni) and Dwarka Prasad (Sanjeev Kumar), who decide to avenge themselves against the wrongs done to them by Bhawani Prasad by killing Kundan, attack him at his sister’s wedding. But a dancing girl Laila (Vyjayanthimala) saves him. Dwarka attacks Kundan a second time but dies in the process. Overcome by remorse, Kundan goes to Ganeshi’s house as Bajrangi in an attempt to win over his affections and bury the enmity.
