It's a Mega blockbuster by Tinu Anand featuring Amitabh Bachchan in a title role. Pre-release advertisement of the movie made the frenzied fans of 'Big B' to rush to the theatres.
To restore his family dignity after his cop father is framed and murdered, Bachchan grows up to take on twin personalities. One is an effeminate low-ranking cop and the other a mysterious crime-fighting action figure in a leather get-up.
Vijay (Amitabh Bachchan), who is a Police Inspector pretending to be a chicken hearted person on duty. Whereas during the night time he becomes super human, wearing all black dress (weighing 19kgs), carrying a thread to hang the wicked as 'Shahenshah'. He destroys all the evil, anti social, anti national elements from their roots & branches.
The music by Amar-Utpal was wonderful. The dialogue 'Rishte Mein Hum Tumhare Baap Hote Hai, Naam Hai Shahenshah' was quite popular.
One note can be drawn, Amitabh Bachchan films are only his films and there is no other character playing any concrete role. Amitabh Bachchan spells over the audience with his great look & enviable performance. One incidence related to the movie & popularity of Amitabh Bachchan is really exciting. The film was planned to be released on 12th Feb'88 all over the country. But at one place, the print of 'Shahenshah' came on 11th Feb'88 at 3PM. Interestingly the news spread like wild fire all over the town & the fans of Amitabh Bachchan came to theatre & forced to show the film that day only.
