Deepak Khanna was a distinguished lawyer whose reputation was such that even opponents treated him with great respect. He had worked hard to create the most respected film in Bombay. Yet he was a sad man. His only son Milind had refused to become a lawyer. His whole legacy was under threat. The firm for which he had toiled with his sweat and blood was now poised to slip away from his hands.

Till one day a brilliant opportunity presented itself by virtue of his son falling in love with his mantor's grand daughter Mridula. He immediately grabs the opportunity and convinces her that she should become a lawyer. He grooms Mridula and makes her into a good lawyer,even sending her abroad to further studies.With Mridula and milind marriage everything turns upbeat in the Khanna family. Deepak's wife Uttara is more than happy with the presence of a daughter in law and really dates on Mridula. Mridula becomes pregnant in due course and the whole family is excited and looking forward to the new arrival.

Till one day an old college friend comes to Mridula and asks her to fight a case. It is the case of a close college mate Swati.Who had been married to a big political family and had committed suicide under strange circumstances. The friend Prasad claims that Swati was murdered. She was murdered by her in laws who were very powerful political people. Mridula was dismayed and aghast. She immediately takes the case to her father in law, who she believes will take the cause of justice.

Mridula was in for a shock when her father dis misses the case as very weak and one that his firm should fight. Mridula is convinced that she has a case. She decides to go against her father in law and take up the case. And the ultimate shock to Mridula comes when she realizes that her father in law will defend the accused. Mridula's whole world threatens to explode in her face.

She realizes she is alone in her fight for justice, her fight for what she believes is the truth. But her opponents is not the power brokern who desperately want the truth to remain suppressed but her own father in law who despite knowing the truth was fighting for the enimiuala. She was fighting her mentor, the personwho had taughther everything that she knew about her profession.

Deepak Khanna was in a similar quandary. He had groomed Mridula to become his heir apparent but now he had to remove her from his firm. Not just that but he had to win the case for his clients because of his professional responsibility. He had to win and Mridula had to lose. A proposition that meant that maybe it would shatter her faith in the concept of justice and fairness which Deeepak Khanna had himself instilled in her as the backbone of their profession. If she lost maybe she would never want to continue as a lawyer, which would again threaten his legacy, his firm.

The whole family threat us to come apart. The criminals keep mounting pressure on Mridula to give up the case. Deepak Khanna also wants the same but he can only wish the insults and the character assination that follows in the court of Swati, her mother, her friends further steels Mridula's reserve to win.
