A rich factory owner’s son (Amitabh Bachchan) is insulted by an idealistic trade-union leader (A K Hangal) and he and his father (Om Shivpuri) decide to do something about the old man. Without informing his father, the son sends for his friend Somu (Rajesh Khanna), who’s living and working in Delhi. Somu arrives and is secretly entrusted with the task of turning the factory workers against their leaders. In the ensuing sequence of events, Somu begins to have a change of heart and discovers that the workers and their struggles are becoming important to him. His conscience begins to awaken…… This dramatic and poignant story of friendship and betrayal is directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and co-stars Simi Garewal and Rekha. R D Burman’s superb soundtrack includes ‘Diye Jalte Hain’, ‘Nadiya Se Dariya’ and ‘Main Shaayar Badnaam’.
