Almost into her middle age, after years of being barren the Raja Sahebs wife gives birth to a baby boy. On that very day, in a nearby encampment of gypsies, the gypsy chiefs sister also delivers a baby boy. As is their wont, the gypsies celebrated the event with food and drink. Tragedy struck. A number of gypsies died on consuming liquor bought from the Raja Sahebs shop. Infuriated the gypsy chief marches to the Rajas palace to demand justice. Angry at the disturbance to the celebrations in the palace, the Raja orders the burning down of the gypsy encampment. In the melee, the newborn child of the chiefs sister died. The gypsy chief kidnaps the Rajas son and places him and places in the arms of his dying sister. The Rajas son grows up as Shankar (Mithun Chakraborty), a boatman. His closest friend Shambhu (Danny Denzongpa), a woodcutter. Meanwhile, the Rajas Chamberlain, has foisted Sharad on the royal household as the Rajas son. Sharad immediately kills the Chamberlain, intent on acquiring all the wealth for himself. Not content with that, he drives away all the woodcutters and boatmen. When both, Shankar and Shambhu unknown to each other fall in love with Reshma (Vijayta Pandit), an orphan girl, Shambhu becomes Shankars sworn enemy. His burning jealousy drives him into a plot to kill Shankar and the evacuation of the gypsy camp, which leads to the climax of the film.
